October 24 Update

Dear Friend of the Albany Twin,

It’s been about a year since our community meeting and we want to share that Friends of the Albany Twin (FOTAT) is alive and well and working to save our neighborhood theater.

A group of us with skills from movie theater operations to film production to real estate to communications have been meeting regularly to develop a plan to acquire and operate the Twin as a community-based movie theater.

Members of FOTAT have met with nonprofit groups who have saved their local theaters from Oakland to Des Moines.  We have also traveled to Chicago to participate in the Independent Film Exhibition Conference.  We have received advice and feedback from real estate brokers, general contractors, architects, and theater operators.

Under the guidance of an experienced attorney, we have formed a nonprofit corporation and submitted an application to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status.  In addition, we have secured a fiscal sponsorship through Independent Arts & Media.

We are delighted by the enthusiasm and support that our community has shown toward saving the theater.  Our outreach to Albany city staff and all current members of the City Council, and their positive responses, have encouraged us as we move forward.

We are currently in conversations with the property owners about the possibility of acquiring the theater.

How can you help?  First of all, thank you for reading this and being engaged in this effort.  Please stand by for our call to action when the time comes. We welcome you to share this newsletter with anyone in your network who might be interested, and encourage them to sign up for further updates.

See you at the movies!
